WHAT IS OUR MEETUP ABOUT?

Meetup was founded in 2002 by Scott Heiferman and Matt Meeker, and is based in New York City. Heifernman cited the September 11th attacks in New York City as inspiration for him to make it easier for strangers to come together.  Since then, Meetup has grown to over 28 million members who have organized over 260,000 meetup groups. In over 179 countries, 610,000 monthly meetups take place. Our meetups compliment your language school or personal study. We now have almost 1,400 members in more than 120 countries. All our members come from Duo Lingo, Meetup.com and word of mouth. We have transitioned from an in-person event to an on-line activity and I must confess that the online version is much more satisfying as it has made our reach global.

How is this for a family network?

Covid-19 forced us to go online. Going global was good for us. We now have friends (extended family) in every remote corner of the earth, thanks to Covid-19

MEETUPS

Our first WESPEAKENGLISH meetup was in the summer of 2014 at SUNSET in Marina di Pisa, Italy. It was an immediate hit and it was attended by a broad range of members from Italian soldiers to students and professionals. There were foreigners but never exceeding 10% of the participants at that time.

The intended purpose was to create a place where Italians could practice their English in a relaxed and natural environment without the stress of feeling judged for their performance or participation. RELAXED TO THE MAX
The unexpected result was that just as many foreigners would also attend.  We were pleasantly surprised to see the enthusiastic response and the meaningful relationships that were being forged. Many people from groups that would ordinarily never meet mixed with each other forging an interesting and unusual mixture of countries, cultures, ages and professions. Those wishing to improve their English were able to do so having opportunities to speak for hours with English speaking foreigners and native speakers.
Those simply wishing to have a fun group of friends also were able to become a part of an active and fun group. With almost 1,400 members now, from more than 120 countries, we are planning to increase our activities.

“The most magical thing about the wespeakenglish meetup, is that people who would not normally meet have an opportunity to meet. We are in a relaxed social situation and we speak in English or in French.” This makes it easier for strangers to come together.
